:) Replacing my old make up with new vegan versions has been a challenge. I want cruelty-free products, but have had some bad experiences with some when the idea was new years ago. I've been finding some good products out there, and thought I'd mention some that I picked up today that I love!!
The company is Smashbox Cosmetics, and can be purchased online, as well as in stores like Sephora. I happened to be at the mall and wanted everything from Smashbox that I saw. Lol! Urban Decay products were there at Sephora as well, but not all of their products are vegan, and these didn't specify, so I went with the company I read to be all vegan. I'm glad I did.

I found the most beautiful eye shadows and an eyeliner that I picked up. It will be nice to add these to my growing vegan collection! They are a little expensive, to me, but the quality is amazing. I love knowing it is cruelty-free. And oooh! The colours are SO great! Lol!

I get confused with companies who do not *test* on animals, but may or may not use animals in their products. *grrrr* Smashbox states on their WebSite that they do not test on animals, and are 100% cruelty-free. :)
Good (and affordable) vegan cosmetics and all beauty products are a challenge to me to find. As I discover more, I will post about them in case anyone else finds it challenging too!
**** Update!! ****
Oreo is upset:

He is upset because he read the comments here and see that Smashbox uses real animal hair in their brushes!! Also, some of their products may contain insect ingredients. Read all the comments below for other people's experience with this company and other companies! So frustrating!!

Candi, thank you for this great advice! yes, we're moving to the sunny state for my research! i'm very excited and i hope we're gonna feel good there even though they told me people in FL are pretty conservative, well, let's see.. when i'll start my PhD i can always move to another state. Perry and I would love to move to the New England area.. well, we'll see in a couple of years!
anyway, i took a look at the website and they have a lot of cool stuff. i do have a list of cruelty-free cosmetic companies but they're all italian so this one is gonna be really helpful!
thank you!
way to go girl!
Thanks for the info., Candi! I've always like smashbox stuff , but didn't realize it was cruelty-free. I just don't have that much make-up, so I'm a bit out of it, and can use all the advice I can get!
I don't usually wear makeup so I can't justify the high cost. At the rate you're supposed to replace the items (6 months mascara, 1 year lipstick) I'd get one or two uses only!!
A while back I found this company online called E.L.F. and coincidentally they were recently listed on PETA's homepage. http://www.eyeslipsface.com/defaultflash.asp

Arbonne is also cruelty free. They have makeup and skincare products. It's a little more high end, but very nice stuff.
I use the Smashbox products too and like them very much. I just wanted to point out that their brushes are made with animal hair so don't order them, if you are a vegan.
Technically, Smashbox is not vegan. Here is what they wrote:
"Animals" is a term widely recognized to mean mammals. Our cosmetics are free of animal ingredients. Some vegans may also consider "Insects" to be animals. This is a gray area and is even debated by PETA followers. Some time ago, Smashbox determined that our official interpretation of "No animal ingredients" really means "No animal ingredients…insects are not animals". We have continued to use Carmine, Beeswax, and Honey in cosmetic formulations. Our brushes are not cosmetics so technically are not subject to this claim.
It's a date then !
You look good in any color but really Freckles, you know I love you only wearing that leaf, too.
I remember that mango lipstick that tastes so good. Each time I eat a mango, I think of you. That should tell you something.
Hello! :) Thanks for the comments!
Val- I wish you'd move to the New England area! Cape Cod and Woods Hole Institute needs you! (I was at Woods Hole once and it was very impressive!) You may dislike the cold though. Lol!
Crystal - thanks for the info!! I know lots of people don't wear make-up, but I loooove it! :P It's really frustrating to see the list from a "peta listed cruetly-free" comapny with so many non-vegan items!! I keep running into this problem. Some companies will not write back when you ask, either. Thanks for the info! $1! Wow!
Thanks for the info about Arbonne, Diann!! ;)
Thanks for stopping by and for the info, Starla! I didn't get any brushes myself, but thanks for posting that they use animal hair. Makes me angry that a company cannot just be 100% cruelty-free by the true (not legal version) definition!
Hey Sherri! Thanks for commenting in my blog. I think if a company uses insects and animal hair, how can they state "cruelty-free" and animal-friendly? Makes me angry. I keep running into this kind of thing and tend to avoid products I love because I get conflicting info. :( *sigh* I suppose I can try to write to them again and find out exactly which cosmetics have those insect ingredients. I don't buy the foundations or brushes, but I'm curious about the shadows.
Does anyone know if MAC is vegan? I heard that it is, but I'm always distrustful! Lol! I have some of their lipsticks still, and like them a lot.
I hear ya !
I'm having a lot of trouble locating totally vegan cosmetics that I can afford.
I'm going to go check out that link that Crystal gave you :)
Insects are not animals...that's precious !
I agree with Crystal- E.L.F. has cool stuff- I found out about it totally coincidentally when my friend told me about them, and then found out they are animal-friendly!
I would add Origins to the list- but does anyone know anything about Origins that I don't?? I would love to confirm that Origins is animal-friendly because I love their stuff.
Awww- Oreo needs a hug! And a kiss! From me!
Hi Gaia and Bazu! :) :)
Oreo loved his hug and kiss. Lol!
I love Origins too, and have read that some products are vegan. Some. I just wrote to Origins to see if I can get a response out of them directly. I will post as soon as I hear anything!! Wow, you have to be Agatha Christie as a vegan, huh? So insane.
I also wanted to mention that www.veganessentials.com has a fairly large selection of vegan makeup.
www.beautywithoutcruelty.com is a great product line that does not have animal ingredients in any of their products (including makeup). I don't have any of their makeup but I do use their shampoo, lotions, face soap, etc.
Whooo hooo! Now I know what to buy if I ever start doing drag shows! Hahahahahaha :)
Just kidding :)

I just received info back from Origins, and here is what they wrote:
"From the beginning of Origins, it has been our philosophy to formulate with
non-animal ingredients.
Regarding the use of non-vegan ingredients, we would like to explain that
the majority of our products are appropriate for use by our vegan
consumers. We do, however, use beeswax or honey in some of our
formulations. Beeswax is naturally produced by bees during the process of
making honey, and both ingredients come from nature-driven renewable
sources. Honey and beeswax ingredients will appear on a product's
ingredient label if either is present in the formulation.
Ingredient lists for any of our products are available upon request."
Hello,
I stumbled upon this page when I was looking for vegan cosmetics..
I bought 5 colours of lipsticks from ELF cosmetics and the powder.
I really like the lipsticks..they all go on a bit glossy...they are in a convenient tube and are liquid lipsticks. Most of them are a bit pinkish but I dont mind
The quantity is not too little for the $1..:)
I received my order in 3 days!!
urban decay has a slew of vegan products, even brushes: http://www.urbandecay.com/vegan.cfm
ooh, and smashbox also made two eyeshadow palettes for peta for earth day.
What are Smashbox winter skin products? Are they good and safe?
I have a blog about vegan cosmetics and skin care that might help: www.veganbeautyreview.com
:)
