Certified Organic Grapes:

I recently had been searching for vegan wine. I could not find any that were clearly vegan, so I searched online and found The Organic Wine Company. They have a specialty section of vegan wine! Hoo! I placed an order for 3 vegan red wines and figured I'd surprise Jamie. The surprise was for both of us though, since he had also placed an order for 3 vegan wines from the same company! (We're too much alike and he's scaring me now!) :P To add to the weirdness, I received both boxes on the same day. Lol! 6 bottles of wine... you may not see much of me this weekend.
In our stash from left to right: A Merlot, a Pinot Noir, two Syrahs, a Chardonnay, and a Côtes du Rhône.

Why aren't all wines vegan?
Wine is clarified, or cleared, after fermentation. Some of the ingredients used include:
- edible gelatins (made from bones)
- isinglass (made from the swim bladders of fish)
- casein and potassium caseinate (milk proteins)
- animal albumin (egg albumin and dried blood powder)
- chitin (fiber from crustacean shells)
Yeah. Say no more!! So aside from these being vegan, I am happy that the grapes are organic... I'll drink to that.
So thanks to Jamie for stealing my great idea of ordering vegan wine. ;) Please help me sample these, and we can write reviews on the blog... if we can remember anything about the wines! :)

Ooooh... eerie, Candi.
"great minds think alike" - something tells me that's a very cool coincidence for you and Jamie.
i laughed aloud when i read that we may not be seeing much of you this weekend! HA!!!
VIVA VINO! Enjoy in good health, Candi!!
eeeh, I didn't know... thanks for the vegan wine info. Did you AND Jamie each choose the same Syrah? How wonderful to be on the same wave length. Stunning photo below of the turkey vulture. And of your doggie in jean jacket -- soo Cute! :o)
Lol! :P I cannot drink a lot actually, so 6 bottles is kind of crazy for me to have in the house all at once. They make a nice display though! :)
Vicki, yes! We each got the Syrah, so hopefully we will like it! I like the mixture we got, and I can't wait to try one, or two, or six. Lol! :)
Meep...
I had NO idea that wine weren't vegan >_<
Now I know xD
Who comes up with these filtration methods?
"Hey Bob, this wine is kind of cloudy. How do you think we could make it clearer?"
"Well, Jim, I got this pile of fish swim bladders over here - you think that would work?"
"Great idea! But just to be sure, throw in some of that dried blood powder too, ok? That should clear this wine right up!"
wow this is very interesting. i had no idea such products were used!
there is a great vegan wine bar in NY you should go to if you're ever around... it's called Counter, in the East Village. i think you'd enjoy it!
This is a great post, Candi. I drink wine almost daily and when I'm not drinking it, I'm usually cooking with it. I'll have to see if I can get any of these in Ottawa. There's also a vegan wine guide available here:

I've been thinking of putting together my own vegan wine list, but it would probably only be useful to people in Ontario (we have a province-run/province-wide Liquor Store). Over the last few months, I've turned into a wine fanatic. I'll spend a couple of hours a week researching wines (everyone needs hobbies!).
Ooooh Candi, I think that we are going to get a little tiddly together this weekend :o) I can't wait! *hug*
I love that you both ordered wine for each other. Have a great weekend!
And even organic wine is no guarantee for vegan wine either (although chances seem to be higher). Last fall we contacted some organic wineries directly and most of them had a positive answer. We visited one and came back with a car full of wine. Just like buying local food, it is also nice to know where your wine comes from. This weekend we will probably go back and get some more. :-)
eww, I had no idea that when you are drinking wine, you could *really* be drinking a nice glass of boney blood powdered fish bladders. :-p
Oops, meant to also say that it is pretty spooky that you both ordered the same wine! You are both on the same wavelength...or you are just both boozehounds! ;)
Such a cool - and rewarding- coincidence! I can't wait to read your reviews, if you can remember to jot them down, that is. ;-)
I wish all wines were labelled as to whether they're vegan or not. You would think with all the allergies and religious restrictions out there, it would be more of a priority. Sigh.
*sip* *sip* *goose* *goose* *sip* *sip*
:p
It grosses me out to think of the sorts of things that are used to filter wine... Ick. This is a good post. I love red wine, and I am slowly trying to compile a list of the definitely vegan ones and the definitely not vegan ones, but I have not moved to 100% vegan wine yet just because it's so unclear, and because the ones that are vegan tend to be a bit more pricey. I do love that Côtes du Rhône, though, so I am excited that it makes the list!
You and Jamie are too cute! LOL!
It's insane the amount of junk that's hidden in our foods. If it wasn't for your article, I would still totally ignore you find substances derived from bones or blood or... yuk!
